Health and safety inspectors are responsible for ensuring that the legal provisions pertaining to the health and safety of workers are adhered to in the areas of employment that fall under the ambits of the prefectural departments. On identifying contraventions, § 24 of Law 2224/94 accords such inspectors the right to impose a fine of up to GRD 3,000,000, to close the enterprise for a period of up to six days and to issue a recommendation for a longer suspension of activity and, indeed, for the irrevocable closure of the company. In the case of public-sector employers, a special procedure comes into effect rather than a fine: the contravention is reported to the Minister of Labour and Social Security who examines the case together with the minister responsible for the department in which the offence was identified.
