3.4.5.GR-iv.5 Institute of Vocational Training (IEK)
3.4.5.1. Aim
To provide vocational alternatives to those who have finished Lykeia without acquiring vocational qualifications.
3.4.5.2. Legal basis
Law 2009/92 on the "National System of Vocational Education and Training".
3.4.5.3. Contents
The Institutes of Vocational Training constitute a new level in the Greek training system and offer alternative vocational pathways. Students of the Institutes can obtain qualifications which are essential on the labour market and at the same time receive certificates which are recognised both nationally and by the EU.
The Institutes also cater for persons in employment who wish to obtain additional vocational qualifications or who wish to change their profession.
The Institutes offer basic training and specialisation in the following vocational sectors:
Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Commerce, Engineering, Chemistry and Materials, Economics, Administration, Health and Medicine, Car Mechanics, Environmental Studies, Electrical Engineering, Automation Control and Applied Arts. The period of training is between three and five semesters, depending on the vocation chosen.
3.4.5.4. Financial resources
Ministry of Education, ESF and fees paid by the trainees. The OAED offers additional incentives to participants in IEK programmes in the form of scholarships, grants, etc.
3.4.5.5. Institutional support
Ministry of Education.
3.4.5.6. Duration
Unlimited.
3.4.5.7. Effects
The number of IEKs has been expanding since 1992. They may be established by both private and public organisations (the OEEK has already established 78 IEKs, for example, and the OAED 28).
